Fighting For Your Wallet
Indiana House Democrats outline their 2026 legislative priorities.
Dear neighbor,
Yesterday, we started the 2026 legislative session. For the next two months, the Indiana General Assembly will be meeting to debate and pass bills. I’ll be fighting for an Indiana that’s more affordable for you and your family.
From the cost of groceries to utility bills, so many people are struggling to make ends meet. The average age of a first-time homebuyer in Indiana has risen to 40. Around 8% of Americans ration their medication to afford other necessities. Households are spending almost $30 more each month on utilities. It’s abundantly clear that many of our neighbors are struggling.
That’s why I’m fighting to lower the cost of living. I’ll be working alongside the rest of the Democratic Caucus on the Working Hoosiers Agenda. Throughout the session and the rest of the year, our caucus will focus on lowering costs for utility services, helping more Hoosiers become homeowners, and undoing the harms done to our local communities by Senate Enrolled Act 1.
Our agenda includes:
Priority One: Cut Utility Bills
Eliminate the sales tax on residential utility bills.
Protect Hoosiers from being overcharged by limiting excessive utility company profit margins.
Pause skyrocketing rate hikes.
Get big utilities out of politics by ending the appointment of political cronies to consumer watchdog positions and banning spending on political contributions and gifts.
Priority Two: Lower Health Care Costs
Cap insurance premiums.
Create a state health insurance exchange.
Stop medical debt from impacting credit scores.
Priority Three: Make Homeownership Achievable
Help Hoosiers save for their first home by creating tax-free savings accounts for home purposes.
Establish a first-time homebuyer grant program funded by a tax on predatory real estate investors.
Deliver a property tax credit for real and immediate relief for homeowners.
Priority Four: Reduce The Cost of Child Care
Create a public-private partnership program to split child care costs between employers, the state of Indiana and parents.
Save families money through a child care tax credit.
Fully fund Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) vouchers to keep daycare centers open and parents at work.
Priority Five: Support Safe Communities
Fund the police, fire, and EMS by revisiting Senate Enrolled Act 1 and inviting more public input.
Keep violent offenders off the streets.
There’s no shortage of work to be done to help Hoosiers get ahead. Even though we have under two months to pass legislation this session, I look forward to doing everything I can to make this state better for you and your family. The Working Hoosiers Agenda is a great first step towards a future you can afford.
In service,
Chris Campbell
